Firefox Gains Slowing

Firefox’s market share grew just 15 percent in the five weeks leading up to Feb. 18, 2005, the latest benchmark available. In the previous six weeks before that, the browser grew at 22 percent clip. These figures compare with a 34 percent increase between Nov. 5 and Dec. 3, which coincides with the release of Firefox Version 1.0 on Nov. 9. (full story)

Asynchronous JavaScript + XML

Ajax isn’t a technology. It’s really several technologies, each flourishing in its own right, coming together in powerful new ways. Ajax incorporates
  • standards-based presentation using XHTML and CSS;
  • dynamic display and interaction using the Document Object Model;
  • data interchange and manipulation using XML and XSLT;
  • asynchronous data retrieval using XMLHttpRequest
  • and JavaScript binding everything together.

    Rumeurs...

    Audioscrobbler

    Audioscrobbler builds a profile of your musical taste using a plugin for your media player (Winamp, iTunes, XMMS etc..). Plugins send the name of every song you play to the Audioscrobbler server, which updates your musical profile with the new song. Every person with a plugin has their own page on this site which shows their listening statistics. The system automatically matches you to people with a similar music taste, and generates personalised recommendations.

    "Bush officials have divorced themselves from reality.

    They flipped TV's in the West Wing and Air Force One to Fox News. They paid conservative columnists handsomely to promote administration programs. Federal agencies distributed packaged "news" video releases with faux anchors so local news outlets would run them. As CNN reported, the Pentagon produces Web sites with "news" articles intended to influence opinion abroad and at home, but you have to look hard for the disclaimer: "Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense." The agencies spent a whopping $88 million spinning reality in 2004, splurging on P.R. contracts."

Get back in contact with my nephew so you can make it happen, then it's official like a referee's whistle. If you want this car to blow, give it to me. This is Snoop Dogg. Preach!" Can This Black Box See Into the Future?

    During the late 1970s, Prof Jahn decided to investigate whether the power of human thought alone could interfere in some way with the machine's usual readings. He hauled strangers off the street and asked them to concentrate their minds on his number generator. In effect, he was asking them to try to make it flip more heads than tails.

    It was a preposterous idea at the time. The results, however, were stunning and have never been satisfactorily explained.

    North Korea propaganda posters

    Pay attention!

    You There, at the Computer: Pay Attention
    "But in the era of e-mail, instant messaging, Googling, e-commerce and iTunes, potential distractions while seated at a computer are not only ever-present but very enticing. Distracting oneself used to consist of sharpening a half-dozen pencils or lighting a cigarette. Today, there is a universe of diversions to buy, hear, watch and forward, which makes focusing on a task all the more challenging. [...]

    A growing number of computer scientists and psychologists are studying the problem of diminished attention. And some are beginning to work on solutions." (link)

    Top 15 Firefox Extensions

    Cheap hosting

    From godaddy.com, 3.95$ per month for 500MB, 100 emails, 1 DB, etc... Nice nice. These guys ran an ad during the superbowl so they might be one of these cash-burning startup of the early days you better beware.

    North Korea claims nuclear weapons

    "Citing what it calls U.S. threats to topple its political system, North Korea said today it is dropping out of six-party nuclear talks and will "bolster its nuclear weapons arsenal," North Korea's official news agency KCNA reported. It is the first time the secretive communist state headed by Kim Jong Il has claimed publicly to possess nuclear weapons."

    Folksonomy

    Explained in Wired.

    "It's very much people tagging information so that they can come back to it themselves or so that others with the same vocabulary can find it," [...]
    "To me, they're a great new organization tool for applications and large content sites. Tags are great because you throw caution to the wind, forget about whittling down everything into a distinct set of categories and instead let folks loose categorizing their own stuff on their own terms."

    Project Googlefox

    For now, Microsoft isn't yet in trouble. It still controls over 90 percent of the browser market, and with the Longhorn on the way in less that two years, Google needs to act quickly if it is in fact planning on launching a browser product. A new Internet Explorer with built-in search capabilities could have a devastating effect on Google.

    "If there's one thing that has the potential to dramatically switch search share now is an integrated search function in a browser,"
