Geneva uni computer jihad
Swiss police last week arrested two African men who allegedly used the University of Geneva's computer system to disseminate Islamic fundamentalist hate messages and justifications for terrorist attacks, AFP reports.
The two - a 27-year-old Moroccan and a 41-year-old Algerian, both staying illegally in Switzerland - were fingered by German-language newspaper Weltwoche which reported the activity to the uni's authorities. The powers that be alerted the cops, who swooped on the pair.

New UI Font Coming to Vista, Office 12
With the release of a new user interface in Windows Vista and Office 12, Microsoft will also update the font that both products use for the first time in eight years. The company says the new font is designed to take advantage of ClearType, and is more modern than its predecessors.

Sur l’autre film, des gamins et des flics se font face, et on ne sait pas lesquels rêvent le plus d’en découdre.

French woman tried to pop out for mid-flight ciggie
The BBC reports that Sandrine Helene Sellies has an acute fear of flying, and on a long flight from Hong Kong to Brisbane, resorted to a traditional Gallic remedy – sleeping tablets washed down with alcohol.
That little cocktail certainly did the trick. In fact, Sellies' sense of fear was so dulled that she thought it would be a good idea to pop out for a relaxing fag. She was seen heading for one of the emergency exits clutching her lighter and tabs.
Sellies began “tampering” with the door and was only prevented from enjoying her last cigarette by a sharp-eyed flight attendant – perhaps she was concerned that Sellies had cracked open the duty free mid-flight.
Sellies subsequently pleaded guilty to endangering the safety of an aircraft at Brisbane Magistrates Court. She was hit with a AUS$1,000 good behaviour bond. If she makes another attempt to join the mile-high smoking club in the next year, she’ll forfeit the dosh.

SopCast

Cet été, l’équipe de recherche du «Temps» (composée de l’épouse et de la belle-mère de votre dévoué correspondant) a fait la tournée des agences immobilières de la capitale française. Objectif: trouver un quatre-pièces pouvant accueillir la rédaction du quotidien romand de référence et son journaliste. Un après-midi, l’équipe débarque dans une agence du 8e arrondissement dirigée par un monsieur corpulent. Qui explique tout net qu’il ne «prend pas les Suisses», coupables à ses yeux de créer «trop de problèmes».
Paranoïa
Discours identique un peu plus tard, dans la bouche d’un possesseur d’appartement vide: «Si vous ne payez pas, comment vais-je vous traîner devant les tribunaux? Je ne vais quand même pas aller en Suisse!» Et pourquoi pas? «Parce que la Suisse n’est pas dans l’Europe.»
Paranoïaques, les propriétaires français ne voient dans l’Helvétie qu’un pays opaque, où attaquer un locataire en justice est lent, coûteux, incertain. Le Suisse ne peut trouver un logement que muni d’une garantie en béton armé de son employeur, et d’une caution bancaire d’à peu près 13000 euros.

Ne croyez pas que ces brimades se limitent au marché du logement: il est impossible de trouver à Paris les prises à trois trous qui connectent les appareils ménagers suisses – ordinateurs, toasters, j’en passe – au réseau électrique. La Télévision suisse romande ne figure pas dans les bouquets câblés qui proposent des chaînes berbères, polonaises ou chinoises. Il y a des problèmes d'approvisionnement en vrai gruyère dans les supermarchés.
J’ai parlé de cette situation à notre ambassadeur, qui dit ne pas être informé de discriminations sérieuses. Heureusement, depuis lundi, je sais qu’il me reste un dernier recours: écrire à Jacques Chirac.

Thai Tourists Warned Of Sedative-Spitting Transvestites

BANGKOK, Thailand -- Thai police are warning tourists of a new scam.
Members of a Thai transvestite gang have confessed to hiding strong sedatives in their mouths and spitting them down the throats of victims during deep kissing. Then they rob the drugged tourists.
The confession came from three attractive transvestites arrested in Bangkok last week. Police say they'd robbed a Bangladeshi businessman of more than $7,300 in cash and valuables.
Police say the victim told investigators he met the transvestites in a bar and invited them all back to his apartment.
After kissing one, he said he felt dizzy and passed out. When he woke up, his cash, watch, mobile phone and notebook computer were gone.
A police lieutenant colonel has this warning for tourists: "Don't rush to kiss a stranger on the mouth or you will end up in a deep sleep."

Russia offers football thugs to France

A Russian politician has offered to send the country's violent football thugs to France to sort out the rioters.
Far right politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky says he already has hundreds of volunteers many with special forces training.
In a telegram sent to France, Zhirinovsky, who is also Deputy Speaker of the Duma, said: "We are ready with volunteer units of football fans and activists who have served in military combat hot spots.
"I am convinced that our initiative would restore total order and calm the rioting within 48 hours."
French authorities have had to use emergency powers in a bid to tackle rioters who have swept the country in the last two weeks.

Au Togo, la police bosse bien - 11/9/2005
Un bossu que deux malfrats tentaient d'assassiner pour lui extraire sa bosse a été sauvé par la police togolaise, a rapporté dimanche la télévision nationale.
Les deux agresseurs, de nationalité béninoise, l’avaient amadoué en lui promettant de l’aider à trouver du travail à Lomé.
"Les malfaiteurs voulaient en réalité l'assassiner pour lui extraire sa bosse. Il a eu la vie sauve grâce à l'intervention de la police", a expliqué un agent des forces de sécurités devant les caméras de la télévision nationale.
La chaîne nationale qui a montré les deux béninois, a également présenté la victime avec sa bosse bien en place.
Ce type d’affaires qui prête à sourire n’est pas la première au Togo. Les bosses auraient des vertus thérapeutiques selon certains sorciers et autres tradipraticiens.
